SeminarsCREEL Seminars 23 August: CREEL Australian Energy Law Seminar - Energy Law and Sustainable Development with Professor Adrian Bradbrook This seminar aims to identify and establish sustainable energy as the central issue that must be addressed in the legal debate on sustainable development rather than leaving it at its periphery, where it has languished to date. In order to achieve this goal the project will devise a comprehensive legal management regime for achieving a sustainable energy future. Professor Adrian Bradbrook lectures and researches in energy law, with particular interest in sustainable energy law. He is a Fellow of the International Energy Foundation (Canada) (2000); a consultant to various agencies of the United Nations in its projects on the development of energy conservation legislation; Chair of the Working Group on Climate Change and Energy of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law (1998-2001); Member, Board of Directors, International Energy Foundation (since 1996); and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Energy (since 1990); He is a Member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law and the Australasian Journal of Natural Resources Law and Policy. Powerpoint presentation available in Seminar Proceeding section 22 - 24 May: Water, Energy, and Climate Change Futures: Australia and China This Conference is a collaborative and interdisciplinary forum organised by the Centre for Resources, Energy and Environmental Law at The University of Melbourne in conjunction with the Australia-China Centre on Water Resources Research. Support has also been given by the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association. The focus of the first day of the symposium will be on “Energy” and will include distinguished speakers from China including Professor Ye Rongsi, Head of the Drafting Committee for China’s Resources and Energy Law and Professor Wang Mingyuan, a leading expert on Energy Resources Law in China. This conference brings together leading Chinese and Australian experts on energy and resources law who are involved in the development of future regulatory frameworks on energy and the pressing issue of climate change and its implications for energy regulation.
The second day of the conference will focus on “Water” and John Langford will speak along with the Chinese director of the Australia-China Centre on Water Resources Research, Professor Xia Jun from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In particular the conference will build on the initiatives developed at the first Australia-China Water Resources Workshop which was held at the University of Melbourne in February 2006 and the establishment of the Australia-China Centre on Water Resources Research. Focused on outcomes, the conference is intended as a collaborative endeavour towards sharing of knowledge and experiences as both China and Australia grapple with the challenge of securing water-futures in both countries.
The interdisciplinary focus of this symposium is considered essential to tackle climate change, water security and sustainable management practices. China and Australia can learn much from each other in this area, as both areas are facing increasing water shortages which will only be exacerbated by climate change.
22 March: The Identifiability Bias in Environmental Law, Professor Shi-Ling Hsu, University of British Columbia, Law Faculty The Centre for Resources, Energy and Environmental Law is hosting a seminar by Professor Shi-Ling Hsu of the University of British Columbia Law Faculty titled, "The Identifiability Bias in Environmental Law". The seminar will explore the idea that people have stronger emotions regarding identifiable individuals or groups rather than abstract ones and that environmental regulation has been hindered by the high profile of individual victims of such regulation. Past Events 2006 On 18 October 2006 the Centre for Resources, Energy and Environmental Law hosted a Pre-Conference Workshop prior to the 30th AMPLA Conference. The Workshop was held at the offices of BHP for which the Centre was most grateful. The speaker for the Workshop was Professor Carlton Stoiber, who is a global authority on nuclear law and policy, having held many leading positions in US Government for over 30 years, including as Counsellor for Nuclear Policy at the US Mission in Vienna with responsibility for relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Professor Stoiber has also been a consultant to international organisations and lectured at a number of institutions, including the University of Montpelier in France. 4 and 5 July 2006 - Workshop - "Examining trends toward individual title over communal lands: Implications for conflict resolution, resource management and sustainability". Presenters included Professor Juanita Pienaar, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa; Professor Richard Boast, University of Wellington and Mrs Margaret Stephenson, University of Queensland. 13 July 2006 - "Development and Agricultural Revitalisation: the South African Land Reform Perspective", presented by Professor Juanita Pienaar, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. 2004 2 August: "Resources, Energy and Infrastructure Disputes in International Investment Arbitration, Speaker: Professor Thomas Wälde, CEPMLP, University of Dundee. Commentary was provided by Mr Steven McIntosh, Senior Adviser at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. The Workshop was attended by 60 participants and was an overwhelming success. Professor Stoiber was also the guest speaker at the 30th AMPLA Conference which was held at the Crown Complex. 2007
